Traditionally Corgis were known as herders and are highly trainable. With love, support, and consistent training tactics they will be a well-behaved puppy. Corgis are a very intelligent dog breed and are able to learn commands very quickly.
Just like any other dog, your corgi will need an established routine to help aid in the process of training. By establishing a solid routine your dog will begin to learn the schedule and rules. This means a regularly scheduled wake up time to go outside for a quick walk and bathroom break, established feeding time, and regular exercising.
Small puppies do not have control over their bladder and will need frequent bathroom breaks. Be sure to take them outside often to avoid accidents in the house. Use puppy pads when you are unable to take them outside. Be sure to place the puppy pads by the established exit. This will help your puppy get used to going to the door when they need to use the restroom. You can eventually move the puppy pads outside to help aid in the housebreaking process.
Corgis are a very intelligent breed and can easily learn voice commands. Start with simple commands like “sit” and “stay”. The vocal command “sit” works well if you use your hand to apply gently pressure on their bottom. Reward them with positive reinforcements like treats and belly rubs.
These tips will help new corgi parents with everyday care for their pup! Remember to check F&M Corgis blog for interesting facts and corgi care tips!
